The KIIB project is a Euregio project, which is carried out by Art Innovation in cooperation with the University of Munster. The goal of the KIIB project is to investigate the technical and economical feasibility of developing a hyperspectral imaging system in particular for applications in conservation of objects of art and historic value. The first part of the project yielded very positive results with respect to demonstrating the feasibility of the development as well as raising a strong interest of first customers in acquiring such a system.
The technical investigations and the market research indicate that an important application of a hyperspectral imager (SEPIA) is to determine the degree of degradation of documents of historic value, and possibly enhance the readability of strongly degraded documents. The National Archives in the Netherlands has purchased a first model of the SEPIA, which was optimized for investigation of historic objects. Therefore, this application may serve as a good example of what type of hyperspectral analysis is often required and what the consequences are for the technical requirements of the hyperspectral imaging system.
