Jan Provoost

Detail of an altarpiece, St John the Baptist, Rijksmuseum Twenthe (Enschede)
Jan Provoost, Bergen (Henegouwen) ca. 1465 - Brugge 1529

Jan Provoost mainly painted altarpieces. This painting at the Rijksmuseum Twenthe originates from the inner left panel of a triptych. The handheld version of the DIVA Mobile Spectral Camera was used to record the painting on-site in the exhibition hall of the museum. The spectral image taken with the Infrared-C filter inserted in the DIVA camera reveals that Provoost first drew his image with characteristic curling lines before painting the picture. This near-infrared image permits a closer look at the underdrawing, which shows that the face was first positioned more to the right, under a different angle. Although Provoost applied his underdrawing with powerful, certain strokes, he apparently decided to turn the head towards the observer while completing the painting.
